Icebergs are huge chunks of freshwater ice which have broken off from a glacier and are floating freely on the sea water. They look magnificent and often take unique natural shapes due to their gradual melting with time. The clear pristine water of the polar regions and thereby the clear ice formation in the giant icebergs also help in enhancing their beauty. These beautiful icebergs help in supporting life in the polar regions too and are a habitat of several animals including seals, penguins and seabirds. Due to their massive dimensions, they often create problems for large ships and boats moving in the sea. The collision and sinking of the Titanic in 1912 was the worst tragedy to have ever occurred due to collision with an iceberg. However, scientific observations and new technologies were introduced after that to monitor icebergs which has prevented the re-occurrence of such mishaps since then. Most of the giant icebergs are found in the Antarctic and some of them are often larger than a whole country in size. The largest iceberg to have been recorded in recent times was the Iceberg B-15, photographed by satellite in 2000. It measured 295 by 37 kilometers with a surface area of 11,000 square kilometers and its mass was estimated to be around three billion tonnes. The largest iceberg to have been recorded ever was an Antarctic tabular iceberg of over 31,000 square kilometers (335 by 97 kilometers) sighted in 1956. Because the density of pure ice is about 920 kg/m³, and that of sea water about 1025 kg/m³, typically only one-ninth of the volume of an iceberg is above water. So, the total size of any iceberg is nine times of the part visible to us on the sea water.
